The most common windows are double-hung and single-hung. Double-hung windows open from the top and the bottom, while single-hung windows only open from the bottom… the top sash is stationary.

Slider windows come with 2 or 3 panels. They open by sliding side to side instead of up and down. 3 panel slider windows can either have 3 even sashes or one large sash in the middle with smaller side panels that open. Sliders are often used in sunrooms.

Casement windows are hinged on one side and crank to open. Awning Windows are hinged on top and crank open. They typically have an interior screen. They allow an entire window space to be open, which is especially useful for egress.

Half Round windows are often used as transoms above other windows. They make a statement over entry doors as well.

Fixed picture windows are a in a frame and do not open. They can be any shape. They are often used beside doors as side-lites and above doors and windows as transoms.

Windows are available in all shapes: Round, oval, hexagon, arch top, round top, quarter round, triangles and more. Most are fixed but some can open.

Double-hung and single-hung windows can be made with uneven sashes. Cottage style has a smaller top and larger bottom sash. Oriel style has a larger top and smaller bottom. This is done to add a design element or to change the center rail so that an outside view is not obstructed.
